The short answer
The honest short answer, within astrology: the zodiac is a symbolic map of the year, twelve signs along the sun's apparent path, each with its element, rulership and character. Astrologers read where planets sat at a moment to describe tendencies. Outside the tradition: none of it is proven science, and it works best as a mirror for reflection. It cannot decide your future, and a reading does not need your birth date at all.
What zodiac and astrology can and cannot do
Within the tradition, a chart describes character tendencies, seasons and timing windows. People find real insight in that language, and jyotish, India's own astrological system, is a deep and serious tradition.
Astrology cannot verify anything, predict death, fix a marriage, or guarantee an auspicious date. It cannot replace the decision you are avoiding. And no honest astrologer should sell you gemstones and remedies to repair a planet.
